黃友嘉會長的父親早於60年代已經加入廠商會，故他對廠商會早有認識，而他向來對公共政策素有研究和興趣，故於1994年加入廠商會，希望能有機會為業界發聲，並向政府建言獻策。他並提及成為會長前在廠商會的工作，包括負責籌辦3屆十大名牌選舉，擔任商會會刊編輯聯席主席、兩岸三地商貿委員會首兩屆委員，以及廠商會蔡章閣中學校董等。
