黃友嘉會長的父親早於60年代已經加入廠商會，故他對廠商會早有認識，而他向來對公共政策素有研究和興趣，故於1994年加入廠商會，希望能有機會為業界發聲，並向政府建言獻策。他並提及成為會長前在廠商會的工作，包括負責籌辦3屆十大名牌選舉，擔任商會會刊編輯聯席主席、兩岸三地商貿委員會首兩屆委員，以及廠商會蔡章閣中學校董等。

黃友嘉會長憶述2010年出任廠商會會長期間，特區政府正計劃於2012年實施香港政治制度改革，他認為廠商會及商界作為社會重要的持份者，有責任發揮自身的影響力，為完善香港的政治制度發聲。另一件任內重要的工作，便是改革廠商會會長制度，他主張把任期由2年改為3年，讓每一屆的計劃和項目能有足夠時間去完成。
