Activities in Celebration of 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR and 88th Anniversary of CMA

The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong (CMA) is hosting a vibrant mix of activities and campaigns throughout the year to celebrate its 88th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

During his speech at today’s press conference marking the inauguration of the celebratory events, CMA President Dr Allen Shi said, “The return of Hong Kong to the motherland is of profound significance to all Chinese people. Owing to the support of our country and its unique gateway position under ‘One Country, Two Systems’, Hong Kong has not only kept its intrinsic advantages but also developed new prospects. The commencing celebratory events aim to bring together members of the industry and community in Hong Kong to review the remarkable accomplishments of our city, as well as CMA, over the years. We hope to charge Hong Kong people with enthusiasm and encourage them to embrace the new chapter of our development with confidence”.

Although there are many challenges and uncertainties lying ahead, President Shi believes that Hong Kong, with its irreplaceable advantages, will continue thriving and flourishing. CMA will sustain its mission of delivering greater good to the industry, helping it develop strengths and proceed in its journey of prosperity.

CMA Executive Vice President, Dr Wingco Lo, describes the celebratory events as a rich blend of themes and forms, from economic conferences, competitions, corporate social and environmental activities to a television programme.

The highlights of the major events:

TV Programme
Proud of our Lion Rock Spirit, we feel it is the best entry point to project a positive image of Hong Kong. CMA plans to sponsor and produce a TV programme to introduce inspirational stories of successful industrialists, hoping to demonstrate the perseverance, resilience and far-sighted vision of Hong Kong people.

ESG Charter Scheme
Environmental, social and governance (ESG) approach has become an indispensable factor in the sustainable development of companies around the world, with many businesses taking particular interest in the opportunities associated with green economic recovery in the post-pandemic era. To foster sustainable culture amongst SMEs, CMA has announced today that it will be the first chamber of commerce in Hong Kong to launch an ESG Charter Scheme. To become the signatories of the Charter, companies are required to comply with a set of ESG standards and practices. CMA is open to assisting the participating companies in building their ESG capabilities by providing them with a range of services, such as auditing, testing, certification, and training.

HKBPE Entrance Gateway Conceptual Design Competition
Inaugurated in 1938, Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo (HKBPE) holds an iconic status in the history of CMA and Hong Kong. A beautiful entrance gateway design not only attracts visitors but also represents a unique symbol of each year’s event.

In celebration of the two momentous anniversaries, CMA organised a competition, inviting members of the public to come up with creative entrance gateway conceptual designs for the 56th HKBPE to be held in December 2022. A judging panel, comprising representatives from CMA and various sectors, evaluated a total of 20 entries based on their creativity, innovation, aesthetics, technical capacity and relevance to the theme. The winner, unveiled at today’s press conference, was announced to be the design of “Spirit of Hong Kong • Giving Life to Prosperity” submitted by Wong Wing Sze.

Forums
CMA is organising an industry forum on 22 July 2022 at Island Shangri-la, sponsored by HSBC. HKSAR’s Chief Executive, government officials and influential leaders from manufacturing, innovation, technology and research and development sectors will be invited to share their insights on promoting re-industrialisation.

In November 2022, CMA, jointly with UBS, will organise an economic forum, at which prominent figures from the region will explore the ways how Hong Kong and businesses can capitalise on the opportunities brought about by the development of the Greater Bay Area.

The celebration events also include a horse racing cup and a cocktail reception in September 2022, a charity flight within the city for 88 students and their parents from lower-income families, a photography competition for secondary school and tertiary institution students, an invitational 7-A-Side Soccer Tournament, organising a Dragon Boat Racing, a sales promotion at the CMA e-Warehouse and a documentary series about CMA’s history on Hashtag CMA. When the pandemic subsides, CMA also plans to send a high-level delegation to visit Beijing, hoping to brief the national leaders about the latest developments of Hong Kong’s manufacturing industry.

The press conference was also attended by CMA Vice Presidents Simon Wong, Dr Edward Chan, Dennis Ng, Dr Ma Kai Yum, Jackson Leung, Calvin Chan and Robert Lok, CMA CEO Ralph Chow; HSBC Commercial Banking Hong Kong, Head of Corporate (Industrials), Dick Wong; UBS Global Wealth Management Head of Wealth Management Hong Kong Domestic and South East Asia Adeline Chien, and UBS Global Wealth Management Market Team Head of Wealth Management Hong Kong Domestic Michael Chan.
